When Rosalinde Haas started practicing the Goldberg variations, she was experimenting with her harpsichord at home, trying to create transparency. After a month, it was impossible not to record and publish the results.
The setting is 1741, Saxony. Count Hermann Carl Reichsgraf von Keyserlingh is suffering from insomnia. He hires a harpsichord player, Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, to play for him whenever he cannot sleep, and asks Bach to compose the Goldberg Variations.
The infamous Quodlibet (var. 30) is an example of baroque love lyrics, in which love: “Ich bin so lang nicht bei Dir gewest” (I have not been with you for such a long time!) is always contested by appetite “Kraut und Rueben haben mich vertrieben”(Cabbage and Radishes have chased me away!).
